Immediate Relief

Our Mission

Not just giving money —
rebuilding lives

Pa'amonim is a community-based organization dedicated to assisting families who find themselves in moments of crisis — often with nowhere else to turn. Every day, we encounter families struggling to secure the most basic necessities: food on the table, a stable place to sleep, and the ability to care for their children with dignity.

We combine immediate financial relief with structured guidance, helping families regain stability and build genuine, long-term independence. Our work doesn't end when the emergency is over — we walk with families on every step of their recovery.

Because a family in crisis doesn't need a handout. They need someone who won't let go.

"These families are not looking for luxury. They are simply trying to survive and maintain a basic sense of normalcy for their children."

— Yacov Jacobowitz, Executive Director

Crisis

"We Smelled Smoke at 2 AM"

Yossi and Malka Friedman had four kids under ten and were barely making it on Yossi's warehouse salary. Then their upstairs neighbor's space heater caught fire. By the time the family got outside — barefoot, in pajamas, the baby wrapped in a blanket — the apartment was gone. Clothing, school bags, medications, Malka's sheitel. Gone.

They spent the first night on a neighbor's floor. The second in a shelter. By day three, their seven-year-old had stopped talking. Pa'amonim got the call on day two. Within 48 hours, we secured a furnished apartment, replaced school uniforms, and built a recovery plan they could follow.

"My seven-year-old asked me, 'Tatty, are we going to sleep outside?' That was the worst moment of my life — not the fire. That question."

— Yossi, father of four

✓ Outcome

Eight months later, the Friedmans signed a new lease. Their son is talking again. "Pa'amonim saw us."

Pesach Was Three Weeks Away

Rivka's husband Ari collapsed at work. A massive heart attack. He was 41. By Thursday, Rivka was sitting shiva with three children and a stack of bills she'd never seen. She didn't know the password to their bank account.

She couldn't afford matzah, let alone a Seder. Her daughter asked if they could still do the four questions. Rivka went to the bathroom and cried. Pa'amonim sent a counselor who sat with Rivka for three hours, accessed accounts, applied for benefits, and mapped out a budget. We covered Pesach in full.

"The counselor told me: 'There is no shame in this. You're doing the bravest thing a mother can do — asking for help.'"

— Rivka, mother of three

✓ Outcome

That Pesach, Rivka's daughter asked the four questions. A year later, she has a job and a plan she believes in.

The Eviction Notice Was Taped to the Door

Dovid ran an electronics repair shop in Boro Park for nine years. When rent tripled overnight, the shop closed. Savings gone. The eviction notice arrived on a Friday — his wife found it with the kids dressed for Shabbos.

Dovid had been skipping meals so the children wouldn't notice. Chani knew something was wrong when he stopped eating Shabbos lunch. Pa'amonim negotiated with the landlord, covered back rent, and connected Dovid with job placement. We sat with both of them — because recovery only works when the whole family trusts the plan.

"I told my wife we were 'a little behind.' The truth was, I didn't know how we'd make it through the month. When Pa'amonim came in, it was the first time in weeks I could breathe."

— Dovid, father of five

✓ Outcome

The family kept their apartment. Dovid has steady work. And he eats Shabbos lunch again.

She Almost Didn't Make the Call

Shira's divorce left her with two children, an apartment she couldn't afford, and $23,000 in hidden credit card debt. For three months she tried alone — overnight data entry, four hours of sleep, her nine-year-old acting out at school.

She almost didn't call. "I thought it was for people who had it worse." But her sister pushed her. We restructured the debt, enrolled her kids in after-school programs, and found her a daytime job that covered her bills.

"My kids needed their mother to be okay. That's what made me pick up the phone. Pa'amonim gave me back the feeling that I could handle this."

— Shira, mother of two

✓ Outcome

Two years later, Shira is debt-free. She now volunteers with Pa'amonim, talking to mothers who almost didn't make the call.

As Pesach approaches, the burden becomes even heavier. Families already struggling face impossible choices. Parents sacrifice their own needs to provide the minimum for their children. No family should have to choose between paying rent and giving their children a Seder.
